Kyiv, Ukraine, June 3, 2025

National-level activities under the EU-funded CBRN Centres of Excellence Project 100 (P100): Strengthening of Front Line Biosafety and Biosecurity Measures in the South East and Eastern Europe Region have officially started in Podgorica, Montenegro, marking an important milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its capacity to detect and respond to biological threats at national borders.

The training, organized in close coordination with Montenegrin authorities, took place on May 26-28 and brought together frontline and supporting professionals from key institutions, including border police, customs, public health authorities, and emergency responders. Sessions are delivered by six national experts trained through the P100 Subregional Train-the-Trainer Course and Tabletop Exercise.

Mr. Dejan Bojic from the Border Police Directorate and Mrs. Njzaketa Kurpejovic-Vikotic from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the opening ceremony and welcomed the participants. Both officials expressed their appreciation to the European Union, the EU CBRN Centres of Excellence Initiative, and the P100 Project for their continued support and contribution to enhancing Montenegro’s national capacities to address biothreats.

The launch of this training course reflects Montenegro’s strong commitment to strengthening biosafety and biosecurity in line with EU and international standards and increased promotion of inter-agency cooperation at the heart of this initiative.

The 2-day classroom training was followed by a tabletop exercise to test interagency coordination, operational procedures, and national response mechanisms in the event of a biological incident at a border crossing point.

P100 is implemented by the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine (STCU) under the EU CBRN Centres of Excellence Initiative and supports ten (10) partner countries across Southeast and Eastern Europe in strengthening their capacities to mitigate potential biosafety and biosecurity risks. Through targeted capacity-building, the project contributes to regional and global efforts in promoting peace, security, and resilience.
These national activities underscored Montenegro's commitment to the P100 and its dedication to fostering inclusive and sustainable growth through regional collaboration.
The P100 project remains committed to strengthening biosafety and biosecurity capacities and promoting peace and security across the South East and Eastern European region.
STCU, together with the EU, extends its appreciation to all participants, presenters, and organizers who contributed to the success of these events. Their engagement and expertise were vital in achieving the shared mission of a safer, more secure region. This initiative underscores the EU’s and STCU's dedication to strengthening BS&S measures in the SEEE region and fostering international collaboration to mitigate biological threats effectively.
